Lash Myths - BUSTED!!!

The real truth about Eyelash Extensions!

Highlighting the pros and cons:

Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are one of the fastest growing beauty treatments available in the world. Just in a matter of the last few years, they have become available in the majority of beauty salons almost everywhere!  It is easily understandable why this is so; they instantly enhance a client’s natural lashes and with that, completely change their whole appearance.

They are praised for their durability, realistic look and instant enhancement, and many believe it is one of the best treatments out there. In short, a great quote from The Guardian explains their effectiveness: “Want to ‘de-age’ your face? Well, ditch all thoughts of Botox and get your lashes done instead.”

Those who have had lash extensions done are probably nodding their heads right now in agreement.

Questions & Answers:

Is it true that eyelash extensions can damage my natural lashes?

This is one of the most widely believed myths. So why does this myth still circulate? There are several reasons for that. First of all many people do not notice their natural lashes are constantly shedding and renewing, which is an absolutely normal part of the eyelash life-cycle.

An eyelash has a finite life of 60-90 days. They are supposed to fall out. Since they are at different stages of the growth cycle, most people lose 1-3 natural lashes per day on average and never notice it because the lashes are so small. Properly applied eyelash extensions do not affect this natural growth cycle, but you may notice the shedding more than before because your lashes are darker and thicker with the extensions attached.  We recommend getting an infill every 2 weeks to keep them full and lush. If you wait too long your eyelash extensions will fall out and you will require a full set.  A fill averages about 30 to 90 minutes depending on the chosen set.

Long, thicker extensions are not always the best - The extensions used should be slightly longer and thicker than your natural eyelashes. Most of those who have experienced damaged lashes have had the wrong type of lashes applied by an uneducated stylist. Excess weight and length can cause stress on the natural lashes and result in the natural lashes breaking or prematurely shedding.

One extension should bond to one natural eyelash only -  An experienced stylist would fully isolate a natural lash and adhere only one extension to that natural eyelash (Classic lash extensions). This method allows your natural lashes to grow and shed freely and not be restricted by being stuck to other lashes. Allergic reaction to product and damage to eyelashes are caused by incorrect application and can result in itching, pinching and massive clumping.

Besides the reasons above, there are more; client’s themselves often remove lash extensions improperly by pulling them out, cutting them or applying products purchased off the Internet for removal. Lash extensions should only be removed by highly qualified lash extensions technicians using remover that has been formulated for removing that particular type of adhesive. So when extensions are applied correctly, they should be seamless and NEVER EVER should you see clumps of glue ANYWHERE, not even a tiny amount!

Can you shower or swim right away? Are there products you should absolutely avoid?
Keep water away from your lashes for the first 12 to 24 hours after application or touch-ups. Water can weaken the adhesive before it is set and cause lashes to fall off. The after-care varies depending on the glue used. For instance, with glue for sensitive eyes, oil-based products or makeup removers around the eye area are not recommended.

After I had lash extensions removed, my natural lashes were shorter?

Properly applied eyelash extensions do not affect the growth of natural lashes before, during or after application. Most people get used to how they look with their eyelash extensions on, though. When their extensions are gone, their natural lashes seem so much smaller and thinner because they aren’t used to seeing them bare. It’s a case of perception overriding reality.

Many women agree that even applying mascara in the morning, it makes their natural lashes appear much smaller after they remove it in the evening; and this is only after a few hours of wear. Imagine having lash extensions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – it is a psychological shock once there are removed. If you actually measure or take a picture of your lashes before and after, you would find no change, and if they have been applied by a qualified technician, cared for correctly and removed professionally.

Is it okay to also wear mascara?

Using water-proof mascara on the extensions is not recommended for any type of glue, it weakens the glue, plus it is hard to remove and can actually pull off the lashes prematurely when trying to take it off.
If you are planning to wear mascara in addition to the extensions, use a water based mascara and only use it on the tips of the extensions and with a very light hand. This will be enough to give your eyes that "pop" along with the extensions. Using mascara at the base of the extensions will get very clumpy.

A lash stylist would rather spend the appointment time applying lashes than cleaning makeup from the existing ones. If you think your extensions aren't looking full enough ask for more lashes to be applied instead.

How ever if you decide you do not want to maintain your lashes and wish to let them shed completely with your natural lash cycle, you may apply mascara to blend the remaining extensions until they have completely shed.

What are Party Lashes?

Party lashes are small lightweight clusters of lashes glued to the skin and base of your lid with a latex eyelash adhesive. This will give you a much fuller look. This is a temporary look! They will last about 1-2 days and even up to a week if you keep them away from water.
